Remembering (For Noliwe) Poem by Madu Chisom Kingdavid

Remembering (For Noliwe)

I remember the day
We first met at the stream
I was bewildered by your beauty
Words abandoned my tongue, but
We exchanged greetings and names
But i could not look into yours
Because my eyes were in coy pregnancy.

I remember the day
You wove a dance into frenzy like a goddess
At the village-square
I thunder-clapped, our eyes met
Your gaptoothed smiles rose like the waves
And caressed my breast.

I remember the noon
We sat under the green canopy of an udara tree
Twiddling leaves, sharing love vows
Receiving romantic scratch from the sun's fingers.

I remember the day
We swam at the stream
We panted like dogs
We got wet and laughter took possession of our face.

I remember the night
You sang a song of my childhood
That stirred the green foliage of my heart
A multitude of gladness overflowed from my heart.

I remember my lonely yesterday and
How i yearned to remember something evergreen
About us, but lost in the maze of thoughts.

I remember how i thought our memories
Of yesteryears would always play before us
On everyday's screen, but it hasn't.

I pray tomorrow i can remember
How you sat on my eardrums explaining
Where you had long been.
