Remembering, It's Been Years Poem by David Thomas

Remembering, It's Been Years

you and i,
we've been enemies
and we've been allies
we were lovers,
and we were haters
above it all we... were friends

you'd be there for me whenever
and i for you forever
(why did it end like this?)
i miss you the purest of the pure
from i, the black stain on your white dress,
i will not forget you (ever) .

i told you long ago,
my guardian angel he looms over you
with a protective glow and the right,
do do whatever it is you want to do
and i want you to know,
that words no longer matter i know,
but if things were to change...
i'd find my way across the seas to you
to embrace my dearest friend again,
shortly before my death
and forever (never) shall your place die in my heart,
my truest of friends-
(i understand it now)
i say to you now,
it's okay, go ahead.
