Requiem Poem by Isabelle Parkes

Requiem

If there is only one thing to know, let it be this;
In your absence, I hope you notice

The sun’s not as bright as it once was,
And the parks are filled with grounded doves.
The flowers are refusing to open up,
The rain doesn’t look like it’s going to stop,
The shadows are darker than they used to be,
The stars are on leave indefinitely,
The moon isn’t sure what it’s supposed to do…
I guess God’s in mourning, too.

The heavens have opened and the angels gather round
So they can look for the one who fell to the ground.
The clouds make a hole just to guide in their sight;
Now they are finished, it closes up tight.
Every single leaf has fallen from every single tree,
And nobody looks, because they don’t want to see.
Everything is heavier and harder to use…
I guess God’s in mourning, too.

The shadows are getting tired of sitting in the dark,
And all the lovers of the world cannot fill the park,
The roar of the wind blocks out the sound of the people
As they fall from the roof and land on the steeple,
Eventually they’ll come to rest, landing on the ground,
But the laughter of the silent ones will wash away the sound.
A courage like no other is now missing in this city,
And all the beauties in their dresses are no good at sitting pretty,
Because everyone who sees them draws a comparison to you.
I guess God’s in mourning, too.

The night your soul disappeared from this world
The fabric of time started coming unfurled,
And a light went out in a nearby room,
And the hardest of stares couldn’t pierce through the gloom.
No one can know enough of you, what you liked and what you did,
And I’m not sure if they’d listen if I said.
They’re busy sending prayers that can’t be getting through,
Because God’s in mourning, too.

There is only one thing to know, and it is this;
Now you are gone, you will always be missed.
