Isabelle Parkes Poems

Bright lights and a stage and the bold silhouettes
Of the rock gods we pray to by singing along.
You ain’t seen nothing, don’t sit down just yet.
If your pulse isn’t racing then something’s gone wrong,
...

The rain comes down hard but you choose to get wet
So another doesn’t have to feel cold,
You deserve so much more but you take what you get;
The dirt so she possesses the gold.
...

The second hand’s stalking the fabric of time,
The minutes are busy keeping track of this rhyme,
And all the promises this place holds makes the roof start to cave in.
Now you’re stuck at the end, you don’t know where to begin…
...

Look around, don’t you see anything
Besides the things you want to see?
Perhaps you don’t, I’ll be your eyes,
Watch and learn, believe
...

Do they hand out my secrets on street corners now?
What gave it away, a twisted man’s hands?
The look on my face when I refused to bow
To a ridiculous power on stage. There he stands;
...

Who do you think I am when I wake you up in the middle of the night?
What do you think I’ll do when you look at me with such a momentary fright?
A thin sheen of sweat and your heart beat too rapid,
Your hand inside mine, the one thing that is placid,
...

People remind me no man is an island, so I guess that makes me a state.
These people love so many, even the ones they should probably hate.
I don’t want advice from people who can’t take it,
Like I don’t want life lessons from people who fake it.
...

If there is only one thing to know, let it be this;
In your absence, I hope you notice

The sun’s not as bright as it once was,
...

Your vision is blurred and your legs start to ache,
But to keep running blindly is the choice that you make,
With fear under your skin and a chill on your path,
And shadows on walls dividing by half,
...

Neon lights and flashing signs,
Ten-feet ads, looking mighty fine,
I hear he’s singing there tonight,
I hear she dumped him, she was right,
...

Do you really think I’m listening?
Do you really think I’m absorbing
Every single word you say?
This life’s getting a little confusing,
...

This is the sound of desperation
The sirens and explosions
Complicated emotions
This is the hoping and needing
...

Perhaps I could tell you all the secrets in the world,
But then they wouldn’t be secrets,
And your ears deserve nothing less
Than to hear the whisper of excitement,
...

The Song Of Insanity

Bright lights and a stage and the bold silhouettes
Of the rock gods we pray to by singing along.
You ain’t seen nothing, don’t sit down just yet.
If your pulse isn’t racing then something’s gone wrong,
That’s a promise, a warning and a dangerous threat.

I’m here because I want to be, I sing loudly ‘cause I can,
And don’t tell me that I’m crazy, I already know I am.
My friend’s best friend’s brother
Is a friend of a friend of the drummer,
So I’ve got a backstage pass to the lives that we live
And a first-class ticket to the truths that we give.

All the people in the crowd, put your hands up
Like you’re summoning an angel from some forgotten faith.
Now take a break, straighten your hair, fix your makeup,
Then float back inside like the devil’s lost wraith;
Stomp your feet, push and shove, and never back up.

Notes and the music, noise and a rhyme,
Lost in the moment and forgetting the time.
They’re just like the stars, you can’t name them all,
But that doesn’t mean they’re not beautiful;
They tread on the cuffs of their jeans as they walk
And pass round the hope in their words as they talk.

Has your heart stopped beating, did it all go away?
Was it just as you planned or just more of the same?
The band keeps on playing as night becomes day,
Sweat into tears and then pleasure to pain,
You’re slowly going deaf but listening anyway,

Possessed by the sound and the soul and the rhythm,
The words and the beat simply begs that you listen,
An ultimate temptation, the apple to your Eve;
Stay another song or turn around and quietly leave?
A member of the crowd in the concert of humanity,
A note in a bar of the song of insanity.
