Rita Poem by Victoria Gauci

Rita

I knew in an instant that we would be close,
Just as those who have shared many years,
I knew in my heart that we'd created a bond,
All the worries I had disappeared,

To my surprise I never expected,
For you to completely steal my heart,
I figured that maybe you'd take a small piece,
But never such a large part,

The miles are many that divide us,
Yet the walls of my heart keep you near,
I wish I could dry up the oceans and seas,
Make mountains and miles disappear,

Though days tick on by and the miles are many,
I know we will share time again,
For now you're not only my sister in law,
You're a treasured and beloved friend.

1996
(It's funny as I read this now...so many years later.
I wrote this for my now ex-husbands' sister back in the late 80's.
Since the divorce, none of his family has talked to me.
Including Rita.
But I still love her.)
