Rivers 03 - Saraswati: Curse Of Sage Veda Vyasa Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

Rivers 03 - Saraswati: Curse Of Sage Veda Vyasa

Rating: 5.0

On the bank of Saraswati
the holy river of knowledge
sat Sage Veda Vyasa,
started reciting the verses
of Mahabharata
to Lord Ganesha
who wrote them down.

Saraswati enjoyed the recital
and repeated the verses
thus disturbing the Sage
who asked her to keep quiet.

Saraswati, so carried away
by the Sage's recital that
she paid no heed; Vyasa cursed her,
she would vanish from Earth.

Underground she disappeared
at Badrinath, in the Himalayas
flowed down to Prayag to join Ganga,
the holiest of all, say the scriptures.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This story narrated in the scriptures is just a fiction. The River Saraswati flowed from the Great Western Himalayas to the Gulf of Kutch, during the Harappan period, as revealed by excavations in the area. After the river ceased to exist right before their eyes (as mentioned in many scriptures) the people were forced to migrate to the Ganga Valley, where they made up this story.
