Mahabharata narrates another story:
Great Sage Utathya married Bhadra
daughter of the Moon God, Chandra,
renowned in all worlds for her beauty.
The Sea God Varuna abducted her
refused Utathya's request to return her;
furious, Utathya by his ascetic powers
commanded the divine stream
Saraswati to disappear in the desert
and threatened to dry up all waters on Earth.
Scared of the great ascetic powers of Utathya
fearful of more dangerous consequences
Varuna restored Bhadra to her husband.
The desert mentioned here
is the Thar, in today's Rajasthan.

A wonderful narration and it makes history and geography vivid and colourful. It was in 6th form that I learned about the Harappa civilisation of the Indus region. This is beauty 5/5
