Secret Prayer Poem by D.N. Rebb

Secret Prayer

There was a time, when faith meant something
Now, religion leaves everyone judging
If you didn't go to church, you were odd
Atheists were considered flawed
A time, when God was revered
A final judgement day was feared
When a prayer had meaning
In an afterlife we were all believing
Where did we lose this spiritual need?
To heaven, when we die, we no longer lead
Real shame religion is now frowned upon
Having no real alternative to go on
Leaving us no option but to pray in secret
Is this really a healthy social achievement?
Guidance is what gives structure
Answers are found in the reading of scriptures
Unknown fear, perhaps, gives us boundaries
This has calmed mankind for many centuries
Hope is what we can strive for
Wanting peace and love for evermore
Forgiveness is what we crave
From sin we want to be saved
But now, we only pray in secret
Wanting to affirm our weakness
No need to share ones believes with others
Those left, are quite outnumbered
Alone, only with our hearts to discuss
Yet, still yearning for Him to hear us
Through our secret prayer
What tomorrow brings is unclear
As judgement guides to question His words
For a better life we strive towards
But, what are we actually so afraid of?
As we all crave the need for love
Is it so wrong to be thankful for what we have?
Quiet believers separately amass
Leaving them only with their secret prayer
