September Wine Poem by Barry Middleton

September Wine

If I were forced to make a brief summation
of what was worth the time and what was not,
I would not go the way of some I've seen
and trace the river to its source and stop
my finger on each town where I found joy.
That takes too long and I don't have the time.
I'll give the best example I can find
and offer you a cup of Autumn wine.
The latest thing I loved was just a girl,
no grand statement there, no distant pearl
of wisdom there to keep you sane or add
a lot to the common store of philosophy.
Love is like youth, like gold it cannot stay,
yet now I'd give it all for just a day.
But if you ask advice for those in love,
I'd tell them, 'Love, but always keep in mind,
the time may come to drink September wine.'
