Seven Magpies On The Roof! Poem by Denis Martindale

Seven Magpies On The Roof!

Today I stood at my front door
To let the cool breeze in,
As this long heatwave proved a chore,
That was so hard to win!
I lingered there to cool each room,
Downstairs and upstairs, too.
Beyond the rose that lost its bloom
A magpie changed my view.
Upon a neighbour's fence it perched,
And my eyes lit with glee,
And for another one I searched,
Then it appeared for me.

In seconds, there were three, then four,
Then five, just like last week,
To my surprise, there were two more,
And that fact was unique.
Then one by one, they crossed the road
To land upon the roof,
The seven magpies promptly strode
Like penguins in their youth.
They clustered there, then flew apart
To rooftop aerials.
Then I smiled with a joyful heart
At these new spectacles.

They hopped and skipped and wandered there,
As back and forth they went,
Content to mingle and to share
That cool, cool breeze God sent.
Too soon, a car came up the street,
I sighed, somewhat bereft.
Their magpie miracle's complete!
That's when the magpies left.
But then I smiled at what I saw
Before they flew away.
Seven magpies! Need I say more?
They really made my day!

Here is another amazing, mighty, miraculous magpie poem by the Poemhunter poet Denis Martindale. The title of the poem is SEVEN MAGPIES ON THE ROOF! Yes, that happened this evening in a heatwave that made the poet stand at his front door letting the cool breeze in to cool the rooms. After a few minutes, the first magpie appeared. The poet had already written about five magpies recently, yet today broke that record! Thankfully, the birds did not stay in a neighbour's garden but flew up across the road to the long rooftop of the two houses. Some of the birds landed even higher on the rooftop TV aerials to get the free view from there!
