Seventy One Poem by Neil Stewart McLeod

Seventy One

Rating: 5.0

Seventy one's a number
It means driving pretty fast,
It's one year past three score and ten
And that you've made it past.

When counting beats per minute
That's a very healthy stride,
The atomic number of Lutetium
Mendeleev's lanthanide.

The twentieth in the series
As a number it is prime,
It cannot be divided
By three of five or nine.

Facing concern of fading
Or cosmological decay,
It is Conway's constant
In the sequence look and say.

Now the Navy's nuclear aircraft carrier
USS Theodore Roosevelt
Has the designation CVN-71
I think that's how it's spelt.

The year A.D. LXXI
Was Emporer Vaspasian's time
Who founded the Flavian Dynasty
In A.D.69

"In you Lord I take refuge,
Let me not be in shame,
Turn your ear and save me"
Psalm 71 - again.

Lord at the age seventy-one
May I still display
The endurance and energy of youth
For yet another day.

Age is just a number, if you feel young you are young,71 isn't that old these days. After reading your poem, I see the number 71 in a whole new light. A great write.
