Shaft Of Darkness Poem by Elizabeth Zara Pagan

Shaft Of Darkness

Miners toil in caves this hour,
Beneath the ground where darkness reigns,
Small rocks fall as hatchets chops,
Using force, they all take pains.

Workers feel the tremor's rapid thunder,
The tumbling of huge stones descent,
Having scurried scarcely breathing,
They wend their way to chambers at the end.

Lonely in the shaft of darkness,
They blink their eyes in search of light,
Shut in tunnels resembling graves,
Men shout with all their might.

Rescuers hear their friends below the soil,
Aware of the impending doom,
Their strength of will can never move,
Those buried in their tomb.

Each passing moment lessens,
The hours turn to days,
Memories travel through their souls,
Then slowly fades away.

Dwindling into nothingness,
In a static state of numb,
These gentle souls, a friend to all,
Wait for Kingdom come.
