Shattered Heart Poem by Jon M. Nelson

Shattered Heart

He’s serving his country, fighting the war
She can’t help but wonder what he’s doing it for.
They’re expecting a baby, by the end of this June.
And she keeps hoping, that he will be home soon.
He was fighting so proud giving his all,
But no one expected how quickly he’d fall.
She’d grown impatient, She waited too long.
When he hadn’t written she knew something was wrong.
When she opened the door she didn’t understand
Two uniformed soldiers, with a letter in hand.
When they came in the door, she burst into tears.
She knew that the letter, held the worst of her fears.
It told of his bravery, how well he had fought
How he was a hero, even after being shot.
He didn’t go down easy, he put up a fight.
And his final words were, “make sure she’s all right”
She thought to herself, as they finished the letter
Hearts don’t just break, they also can shatter.
