Should We Never Have Met Before Poem by H E Alexander

Should We Never Have Met Before

There is just one question of you I pry:
if, should we never have met before
and shared our lives through richer or poor,
would you marry me now for sure?

There have been so many years gone by
since when we became a nascent love;
we persevered when things got tough,
and soared until we'd reached high enough.

People change as they grow and age,
exposure alters how they see the world,
events remodel the opinions they hold,
their views shift; their dreams have evolved.

Years pass and we turn another page,
we work and play, we love and we rest.
Children come, they grow, then leave the nest;
we look back and judge how we've progressed.

So, should you e'er seek the same of me-
I would wonder why you'd need to ask-
but then, I'm hidden behind a mask
of self dolor, where therein I basque.

But there's no dubiety in what would be
my answer to the question posed:
my heart would break if I should lose
the love that I would always choose.
