Shoulda Been The Osiric Jar

Egyptologists made a mistake,
naming the jar for the guts the Canopic,
after the place in the delta,
called after Canopus the Greek,
the Spartan, who gave his name as well
to bright star Number 2.

The mistake?

All 3,
steersman of Menelaus, place and star
(maybe even jar)
were renamed by wits Intestinus.

All three,
or four,
however hard purists fought,
became known as 'Gutsy' for short.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Surely Osiric after Egyptian god Osiris,
not Canopic after sailor from Greece, Canopus.
Intestinus, Gutsy: surely fake.
