Note: Jose Rizal was a Filipino whose writings clashed with the Catholic friars of his time, exposing the abuses committed on Filipinos by both the Spanish authorities and the Spanish clergy. He was ordered executed and shot at 'Bagumbayan' (now Luneta Park) by the Spanish friars and his body buried in an undisclosed grave. His mother had to search for his body and have it buried and hidden in an unknown grave later to be revealed after the Philippines won her freedom. His death triggered the Revolution against the Spaniards in 1898. But today Filipinos are still chained by the religious control against which Rizal fought.
