Smash Things Poem by Annie Janine

Smash Things

I smash things
against the ground

just to make sure
you can hear me

just for that glance
of annoyance

that small moment
of recognition

just to break the walls
that I worked so hard to build

the ones that hide my emotions
from you

that hide
my love
my pain
my anger

I try to force the tears out
the tears I work so hard

to keep hiding
in my heart

just so that I'm noticed
just so that you know I'm here

but the cuts
the words etched into my limbs
with a single pointed razor

the shameful drops of blood
that hold me together

the words that
are my life

and I caress the scars
just to remember

and I'd show them to you
but probably not

too much pain lies
in those little marks

but the pain goes unseen
and unrecognized

like me
