Smile Through It All Poem by bernadette meessen

Smile Through It All

Weatherbeaten
Haven't eaten
Broken down
In a lonely town
No one to see
No place to be
A cheap hotel
And a trip to hell
White-washed walls
And dirt stalls
Windows black
There's bugs in the sack
Can't stand up, can't sit down
Smile through it all you're a Carnival Clown
Your love is lost
At such a cost
Slipped away
Like night to day
Wasted words
Wingless birds
Groaned goodbyes
and stuttered sighs
Pains runs deep
Get no sleep
Midnight spurts
Morning hurts
One your head a thorny crown
Don't forget you're a Carnival Clown
Find a job
Join the mob
Keep your face
Every place
Scrimp and save
Rant and rave
Curse your boss
And curse your hors'
Stumbling feet
Walk the street
Hit the bars
And pay the stars
White is black and black is brown
That's the way it is when you're a Carnival Clown
Why pretend
Can't transcend
Soul is taken
and your spirit's shaken
Flesh is numb
Too much rum
It's getting late
and easy to hate
Just in time
He's on the line
Please come back
You're what I lack
Pick up the pieces for another showdown
Try it all again you're a Carnival Clown.
