Smiling Jesus Poem by Sujoy Bhattacharya

Smiling Jesus

I bought lots of gifts -
Dresses, cakes and candles.
I saved a good amount of money -
My pocket money I kept captive
in my spacious saving box.
I sacrificed my tongue' s appeal
to spend money on inviting junk food.
A group of rejoicing sparrows
flapped their listless wings to fan the
flame of my desires to buy things that
allured me with ailing temptation.
The evening stars stared at me with
fostering smile to greet my glowing plan.
On the jubilant Christmas morning,
I augmented my impatient strides to reach
the doorstep of the orphanage.
My gifts for the destitute children of the
Trinity charitable trust,
were dangling in glee jubilantly.
The famished tender faces wore a radiant look
finding me at the morose threshold of the
lugubrious orphanage entrance giving me a
warm welcome.
I gave away the gifts to the emaciated figures
trembling in the excitement of delight.
Spending a long time with the joyful bundles,
I went to the refuge of the Lord.
Was it a visionary deception?
I felt a smile waving ripples of blessings
on the lips of the gracious Jesus!
