Smoking Poem by Brittany Perez

Smoking

No one listens because no one cares.
I try to tell them but they do not hear.
They do not see what evil lingers.
Behind each shadow behind each soul.

It pressures everyone night and day.
We think we can fight back.
But all we do is make it worse.
We cannot win this easily.

Can you resist the temptation?
This never ending want?
It has become a habit.
But can you break it?

You don’t want to do this anymore.
But you have grown custom to it.
You did it all the time.
Now you cannot stop.

What drives you to do this?
You are hurting your body.
That’s what it wants you to do.
It wants you to die addicted.

But do you have the will power to survive?
You can’t go on forever.
It will take you one of these days.
When you least expect it.

Having a friend can help.
But only if he is strong.
His body must be cleansed.
Only a cleansed friend can help you now.

You are so black on the inside it worries me.
How have you held up so long?
The black sickness has not yet kicked in.
But it will if you don’t stop.

The first step is realizing.
Can you see how it eats you up?
It started with your mind.
It is slowly moving throughout your body.

Next you must cut it down.
Not all at once.
But in tiny increments.
You wouldn’t want to hurt yourself more.

Push it away.
Don’t let it come back into your mind.
It has no place there.
It was forced out a long time ago.

You don’t need it to live.
It needs you to live on.
But you wont let it live on.
You will kill it now.

You act as if it never existed.
I am proud.
It has been killed.
But not completely yet.

It has made itself home in someone else.
He needs to be evacuated.
It will take time.
He did not feel it come in.

Killing time is here again.
It will be harder this time.
It knows how to beat us.
But we will try to win again.
