Solar Wind Poem by Paul Reed

Solar Wind

Rating: 5.0

Mars,
You have no atmosphere
Not like here -
Earth,
You have a magnetic field
With a significant yield

Protecting us from solar wind
Making it scoot around us
Except when there is a solar flare
Which affects us there

Or corona mass injections
Which can shockwave our magnetic field
Our fate not quite yet sealed;

Then polar regions can shoot particles
Forming the aurora borealis
Energised particles
Who would have believed it?
Who could have conceived it?

Solar flares can damage aircraft
And knock out electricity systems
Such has happened in the past
How long can we last?

The Met office will give us an early warning
Of a deomagnetic storm; forming
So just for a while
We can smile;

Solar wind,
You travel at 300 miles per second
Pretty fast
We stand aghast;

Blows a bubble past Pluto
Out to 100 times
The distance of the earth from the sun
With a plasma bow wave
Can we be saved?

Those particles
Which started life in the sun
End up drifting around the galaxy forever
So we aren't that clever;

We dont know everything
But dont worry!
The sun has 4 billion years
Still to go
So keep our heads low
And carry on.
