Some People Develop An Addiction Poem by Francis Duggan

Some People Develop An Addiction

Some people develop an addiction and any addiction is not a good thing
One might say an unhealthy habit that through our lives to we do tend to cling
Some are addicted to nicotine and some are addicted to alcohol and some are addicted to narcotics the worst addiction of all
The gene of addiction is in the addictive even before they learn how to crawl,
Addictions are very unpleasant for the addicted they can make life hell
And I should know I am addicted to the penning of doggerel
'Til death my addiction is with me and that seems a sad thing to say
It compels me for to keep on penning I wish I could give it away
But suppose I could have a worse addiction I could be hooked on heroin or cocaine
In prison for robbery with violence to buy drugs a crazed fellow sick in the brain
Penning of doggerel may not be the best for you but at least it won't damage your health
But from it you will not earn a living or know of fame or material wealth
Some people develop an addiction that into a bad habit does grow
It is a flawed gene born in you since I am one who ought to know.
