Song of the Ephemeral Love
(Translated from Spanish by Juana Cruz)
I am as a traveler who does not spend more than one night
under the same roof,
Give me a kiss, and forget me, do not try to retain me,
I am the Ephemeral Love.
I am as a cloud that gives shade but for an instant,
an evanescent blaze that produces no coals,
I am the good love, and the mischievous lover,
bid me farewell, and smile upon me,
I am the Ephemeral Love.
I am a love that forgets, but that never deceives,
love that perishes happy, for it was joyfully born,
As the wing of a bird, I pass furtively,
and although one may sow a wing, it will never take root.
Do not try to retain me, allow me to go on,
as the waters of a river flow by, never to return,
I am as a wave, on a beautiful beach,
for waves come near the shore, but return to the sea.
I am the love of loves, that hates the inert,
that steals away the fragrance but leaves the bud intact.
Bid me farewell,
and do not try to retain me,
I am the Ephemeral Love,
Nevertheless, I am love.
