Sonnet: Offerings To God? Poem by Dr John Celes

Sonnet: Offerings To God?

Rating: 4.5

Does Maker want people to give flowers,
Or burn incense or sacrificial beast?
Does Maker want the murder of creatures,
Those looking weary, aged, diseased?

Does Maker want His temples made of gold,
With marbles statues, ivory altar?
Does Maker want human beings killed cold,
Things stolen, offered by men who falter?

God wants just offerings of gratitude,
Man’s prayers praising Him and hymns divine,
And men who wisely keep their attitude,
To be in Heaven for His best grape-wine.

Can appeased be a God by stolen things?
A pauper’s soul matters much more than king’s!
