Spirit & Truth Poem by Luke Easter

There’s a lot of talk concerning spirit and truth,
Like a foreign language it’s easier learned from youth,
Without these two words commanding your heart,
Sometimes it’s hard to tell the gospel and lies apart.

The devil can be smooth, sweet and soft as pure butter,
You’d think his thoughts came from God and no other,
Especially those that cause your mind to spin out of control,
And there’s no other place on earth you’ll ever want to go.

How can it feel so good, peaceful and serene?
You are fully awakened, much better than a dream,
Doesn’t the bible say God only wants us to have His best?
It’s not for real? What do you mean this is a test?


Given by whom, exactly what sort and kind?
Exactly who wants to take control of my mind?
I already know how it feels to experience hurt and pain,
An exam to see if I can be righteous and refrain?

Stop the double talk; just tell me what you mean?
The bible? Yeah, of course I have seen,
I tried several times to read it but you know man,
I was really never able to understand.

How do you mean spirit and truth? Exactly what kind?
This ordinary black book is the only place I can find?
What about all this talk about sex, drugs & rock-n-roll?
It feels so good, hey, where did you say I would go?

So you want me to believe something I have never seen?
Adhere to, trust in, rely on and with my whole personality lean?
From this book believe every scripture preached that I’ve heard?
You do it? Wow! Those must be some very powerful words.

I’m still going to need some type of mentor don’t you think?
A special kind of person guiding me to the missing link,
Bible study on what day? Certainly, just give me a call,
I’ll make sure that time is open; I won’t be doing anything at all.

The truth is something that will always set you free,
And from this release is where the spirit of God will be,
As in weight training it will require plenty of reps,
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
