Spit & Whistle (One Man, One Vote) Poem by Peter Strugnell

Spit & Whistle (One Man, One Vote)

Rating: 5.0

Well all I wanna do is spit and lay some tracks,
just looking for a good time, just looking for the craic*
but now with all this shit going down in politics,
and the world being ruled by a bunch of lunatics,
we sit and watch as they commit crimes against humanity,
mankind slipping on the slippery slope of insanity,
and shit you know the things that are done in my name,
I'm looking for a scapegoat, but who really is to blame,
I'm tired and weary and fighting my indifference,
I'd like to be left alone to follow my path of little consequence,
it seems that time is running out and there's so much to be done,
if I wanna leave a world fit to live in for a daughter or a son,
and so I'm letting no-one decide for me this time,
I'm exercising that god given birthright that is mine,
so call me a taxi and I'll go get my coat
one man, one thought, one obligation to vote
Or you can whistle!

It's a constant battle between my Angels and Demons,
we can save the planet we've got the money and the means,
keep the fat cats, the lobby's and other parasites at bay,
they don't give a shit a single word we have to say,
shareholders given priority together with corporation profit,
we rape and pillage mother earth, just when are we gonna stop it?
What are we doing? what are we doing with our lives?
I'm fraught with fear and my neurones are paralysed,
I'm one man who's in search of his lost motivation,
I'm one man who's brain is coming back from a long vacation,
I care for my children's future for what it's worth,
my generation has been too busy killing mother earth,
we are the governmental politics and all it represents,
so here's my penny's worth, here's my 50 cents,
to those fracking politicians who really get my goat,
watch your back 'coz I'm one man, one vote.
or you can whistle!

There's less to fear from the terrorist bomb and nuclear fusion,
than global warming, climate change and disinformation,
but I don't want to think about that, what do I really care?
I've got a couple of bills to pay and no real healthcare,
neither apathy nor senseless violence can be condoned,
We've all bought our ticket as we travel into the unknown,
the proletariat are rising up and it's plain to see,
the revolution's coming, like a mutiny on the Bounty,
the privileged few are holding all the wealth and riches,
and all the power crazed bastards and bitches,
there are brave men and women out there fighting for dignity,
rising up above the ignorance of an uncaring society,
you have my due respect, and I do salute you,
when under some regimes all they wanna do is shoot you,
my eyes and ears are filled with mirrors and smoke,
so make it clear, simple, with this one man one vote,
or you can whistle!

Question everything and verify your information,
don't build walls and don't think in nations,
It seems ridiculous to be fighting wars of religion,
wars of ideology, influence and wars of attrition,
testing technology, testing bombs from a distance,
obliterating lives, obliterating all forms of existence,
how can we resist when the war machine is in motion,
resist the hate, the thirst for revenge and man's darker emotions,
I'm no Che Guevara, no one man revolution,
with a mosquito on your genitals you'll find a peace-full solution,
I'm no more courageous, braver than the next man, far from it,
so I'm gonna use the ballot box and stop this shit,
I want something better than this, I won't let myself down,
I'd rather hold out my hand than let people drown,
there are bodies in the water and there's an overturned boat,
I am but one man... but one man with a vote
or you can whistle!

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Hi Master Strugnell! There's nothing new nor frontal in what you say; millions feel that away, but the way you say it and the language you use - the everyman's lingo, without (perhaps only) beating about the bush makes your poem a necessary rap these days, and I wish someone or other would let the fire in it all burn with fury and the tempo of bloodiness in his voice for all to hear. Good luck! Every good wish. Wignesan

Many thanks T Wignesan, I'm sure you're right, it is simple, direct and maybe a little obvious, it expresses my sense of impotence when faced by powerful people and institutions. I was stung into writing this following the Brexit referendum whereby as a British citizen resident in Europe I didn't even bother to find out if I could vote in the Uk! no I have to suffer the consequences.
