'State Of Mind' Poem by steve griffin

'State Of Mind'

Words cannot console me.. for the love I live without...
As I finally lay to rest.. the dreams that were in doubt,
For today you finally told me.. what my heart already knew...
But had to hear the words myself.. coming straight from you,
I knew I couldn't have you.. but you know I had to try...
For this broken heart could never mend.. unless you said goodbye,
There's a part of me that's happy.. so proud of what you've done...
And a part of me ashamed.. who wants to turn and run,
Ashamed of my own weakness.. I feel I've let you down...
After all the strength that you have shown.. to turn your life around,
The part of me that's selfish.. says that what I had with you...
Was the 'closest thing to love I've known'.. could never be more true,
But I had to tell you how I feel.. before you let me go...
It's just that I'm in love with you.. and needed you to know,
But love is when you sacrifice.. and put your needs behind...
It doesn't matter what I feel.. its just a state of mind,
I'll just thank 'God' for giving me.. the time I had with you...
'God' knows all the years I cried.. for love I never knew,
For its your life in the balance now.. you've come so very far...
From a drifting spec of cosmic dust.. to a distant shinning star,
The road is hard.. that lies ahead.. but when hard is all you know...
Above all.. that's the edge you have.. that will help your spirit grow,
The changes in your life you've made.. will define the man you are...
The inspiration you exude.. will help others go as far,
You should know your not alone.. in whatever you face down...
I will always have your back.. even if you touch the ground,
For its more than blood that binds us.. with every fiber I believe...
That 'God' intended I'd lean on you.. and you to lean on me.

I enjoyed reading this poem. Respectfully, I see one change you need to make. “You should know your not alone..” The “your” here, should be you’re, as in you are…. We all make errors.
