Steel Symbols Poem by Elizabeth Russell

Steel Symbols

Rating: 0.5

The old blue Commodore
Parked casually on the grass in the backyard
The lackluster patina of corrosion
Oozing from every rusty pore
Steel viscera exposed
For examination of boys
Clasping the ubiquitous symbol of maleness
The stubby cooler
Wrapped around the liquid symbol of their manhood
The beer

They talk
And drink
Tinkering with the car and their place in the world

This is awesome! We also have an old blue commodore parked up on the grass. I have a picture of my son as my screen saver, standing in front of the open bonneted car with a spanner in his hand. Your poem captures this male ritual brilliantly. Loved it love Gyp's
