Street Theatre Poem by Bijay Kant Dubey

Street Theatre

Rating: 5.0

The street for whom
Is a theatre,
Means drama under
The open space
For staging outdoor plays

Nukkad natak,
Street shows, theatrical performances
By the showman, the pantomime artist
Of one sort or another

Generally, leftists, socialists
Stage it street plays,
The people communistic,
Marxistic, Leninistic, Stalinistic

The street play with a purpose,
A concern social, societal
Or economic or ideological
Or of a political stand.

I'm glad that somebody has written about Nukkad Natak or Street Play which do not require formal stage or theatre set-up. These are generally short in duration and carry a social message for the common folk. Thanks a lot. I can recall Safdar Hashmi, an artist, comrade, poet, writer, actor and activist, who was brutally attacked on Jan 1,1989 while enacting his play 'Halla Bol' near Delhi. He succumbed to his injuries and died a day later.
