We know of the limericks having upbeat or sarcastic last lines,
Yet mainstream poems can take us to a Twilight Zone experience.
Vivid descriptions of beautiful scenery or courage in adversity.
We won't know until we savour the poetry by giving it our full attention.
Yes, some phrases seem to stand out more than others,
Yet somehow, the poetry continues to talk to us
Beyond some pleasant short-lived pop song repeating its chorus.
Each verse draws us closer to the central theme
When talented people recite the poetry to us.
At times, we can imitate their skills and performances.
We learn how to slow down the recital to emphasise each syllable.
We appreciate the poet's desire to share beautiful words,
Yet the phrasing is what creates an inner joy.
Yes, there are worlds within language, and not just puns or alliterations
But sensual words that are pleasurable to read and to speak.
Phrases over 50 years ago can still resurface now and then
To offer an added insight beyond logical thinking and its limitations.
Such is the wondrous treasure trove esteemed as poetry.
