Sunrise Or Sunset Poem by John A'Hern

Sunrise Or Sunset

The sunrise arrives no instructions provided
The daily task of paying life's tolls has collided
Not a care in the World as you take your first strides
Lectures or friendly chats are there as your guides
Adulthood lies waiting, time to unfold
Gang culture all left to behold
Career path twists and turns
Several stops tried then a rewind
Girlfriends, lifelong friends, the choice is yours
Choices are made, good and bad
Marriage beckons, the girl of your dreams
Travel together decisions shared
Children join this merry band
Life flies by as older age reached
Terms used such as the twilight of your life
You are still enjoying life's Sunrise
Reading the small print, no advantage it seems
As you grow older career choices not what they seem
Now you awake each morning, avoiding the Trolls
Silence shot to pieces as telephone rings
Appointments long forgotten, ring, ring
The calls that always cause strife
Your cup of coffee put to one side
Deep breaths are needed before going outside
Join the human tide all headed for daily adventures
The conductor taps his baton, time to pay attention
What rhythm will todays activities bring?
Do not drag your feet, walk tall with a spring in your step
Double ration of tolls needed for this seance
Have you ever looked at a scene so serene?
Standing still, lost in Natures beauty
The scene you imagine brings you happiness
You have been here before, your memory reminds you
Where do you fit in this orchestra of daily life?
Wind or string, percussion perhaps
The day it ends, time to reflect
Your toll it is paid your body gives thanks
Home safely once more
You close the blinds, doors are locked
Phone off the hook, to heck with that
A cup of tea a glass of wine
Listen to music, watch TV
Bedtime arrives whatever that means
Another day beckons, your choice once more
Sunrise or Sunset, a voice it calls.
