Sweet Dreams Poem by Aaron Johnson 2

Sweet Dreams

I hardly sleep anymore, I dread sleep.
I fight exhaustion as long as I can, but it always overtakes me.
It's like drowning.
It starts slowly and fitfully. I fight to keep my head up. Then all at once, everything is black.
But I have the sweetest dreams.
Like a prince.
I'm tall, suave, ruggedly handsome. I'm only white sometimes, but I'm always charming and gentlemanly.
And never without my princess.
Her hair is spun gold, soft and fragrant.
Her bright and beautiful blue eyes captivate my soul.
Like mangroves we are bound to grow together.
She holds the key to my heart, and I can't fathom existence without her.
Every second I sweep her off her feet and we find forever in love.
Her eyes meet mine and I awaken with true love's kiss.
Then I stir and search my sheets. I reach to find my beloved, but I am alone and she was never mine.
Wonderful dreams are the worst nightmares.
