Takin' It Poem by Hugh Faulk

Takin' It

Rating: 4.0

I was wearing a pair Dingo boots sitting in the back of math class with nothing to do
Counting the days to graduation and wondering how soft the leg was in Cindy's high heel shoe
Takin' it as far as I could
Takin' it as far as I could

I'd meet my buddies in town on Friday night
We'd ride that strip going nowhere
All we knew, we were there
A pony pack with some smoke in the air
Takin' it as far as I could
Takin' it as far as I could

My daddy said my hair was too long
My mama said I listened to those devil songs
My sister was pretty, her life was like a brief wind
Miss her so, she was my best friend
My brother was the baby and mama treated him that way
But we still had a good time playing in that Georgia clay
Takin' it as far as I could
Takin' it as far as I could

First time I saw her, She rang-up my Yoo-Hoo and pack of Redman
Her eyes was as deep as the blue sea, her hair was color of the sand
She touched my hand when she gave me my change and it turned me on
I picked her up at closing time and we sat on that tailgate until the break of dawn
Takin' it as far as I could
Takin' it as far as I could

Took that Stingray to Atlanta, we walked down Peachtree Street
Faded bell bottoms with no shoes on her feet
Bought a second hand Springsteen eight-track
Played Hungy Heart all the way back
Had the lyrics wrong, we sang 'bought some more jack'
Takin' it as far as I could
Takin' it as far as I could

Hit hard times for a while, tried make better with sour mash wrapped in a black label
A couple of ex-wives later; God sent me an angel with six kids around a table
Seen the sun rise and set with no regrets, this life has been the best by far
Never found a pot of gold at a rainbows end but caught me a falling star
Takin' it as far as I could
Takin' it as far as I could

When life is all over and God calls me home, I want these words written my stone
Takin' it as far as I could
Takin' it as far as I could (like I knew I would)
Takin' it as far as I could
Takin' it as far as I could (like I knew I would)
