Fence Post Poem by Hugh Faulk

Fence Post

Fence Post
I'm really unclear why I'm here
Has it been a year
Since I held my Becky near

My little girl says it is for the best
And I deserve the rest
Haven't seen her in a while
Some days I can't remember her smile

Just like fence posts
We're lined up in row
We're weathered and tethered
Fence wire are memories, stapled to our hearts
Nothing but grass and weeds keep us apart
You never notice as you drive by
Like fence posts
Like fence posts just left here to die

I think about my life, the way it was before
Only to find I'm trapped behind this glass door
Like a goldfish in a bowl for the world to see
Swimming in the waters of your soul, never to be free

One day soon I'm going to head down this hill
Walk pass the cedars with all I have to feel
If I make pass those tracks
I pray they will never take me back
So I'll sit under this old oak tree
In a field of stone with my Becky I want to be

Just like fence posts
We're lined up in row
We're weathered and tethered
Fence wire are memories, stapled to our hearts
Nothing but grass and weeds keep us apart
You never notice as you drive by
Like fence posts
Like fence posts just left here to die
