______Part I______

THE CANDIDATES FOR AUTHOR

Might it be Donne,
I think it be Poe;
So many to choose from
I really don't know.
Socratic old Whitman,
The Rhyming Millay
So many wrote smitten
Bukowski? No Way!
Wadsworth and Longfellow,
Peas in one pod.
A 'Words-Worth' of mellow
To appease the quill godz?
Well, enough bards for now
Free verse at no cost.
Who's the best scribe around,
Could it be...Robert Frost?

_______Part II_______

THE NOMINEES FOR THE MOST PERFECT POEM

Are you kidding me, Frank,
There be no such poem,
'To Helen', my thanks
To Edgar A. Poe.
Favor and flavor
From one to the next
We all tend to savor
Our taste favorite text.
And style, sweet style-
Prosaic or Free,
How about structural excellency.
So many stark elements
weigh in this purse
of literary imminence
to the most perfect work.
Dickinson, Wordsworth, Keats or Blake
All laureate worthy bards of their day
Could one have but written
The most perfect poem
Two centuries later,
We still don't know.
Aside from the fact
Most Poets agree
That their own words in fact
Make the best poetry!
