Thankless Task Poem by Cory Fox

Thankless Task

The ocean high
A perilous spot
My hopeless cry
An ignorant lot
About to die
With this heartstring cut
Then this one tie
Obsess with the what
Just don’t ask why
Embrace the absurd
And justify
Through numbers and words
Somewhere to hide
Lust for the gleam
Piece of the pie
Forget how to dream
Kiss it goodbye
But all of this time
Where were your eyes
When I poured out the signs
Of rational lies
And congenial thinking
Try to keep dry
When all the world’s sinking
Waves drawing nigh
No island to drift
No more to try
Than accept His gift
At last I die
Mere cannon fodder
Breathe my last sigh
Head under water
Eyes to the sky
