The year in question is '49;
The world, it seems, is in decline.
The Soviets dropped their Atom Bomb,
And worldly powers were waxing wrong.
Germany, the Grand Teutonic state
Split and sealed a generation's fate.
And the cold war chilled colder...
The alliances got bolder...
And at Checkpoint Charlie,
They stood shoulder to shoulder.
There's more to add to this year's slate,
For the People's Republic's the new Chinese State.
And south, deep south in Pretoria, bra,
Apartheid's codified as South African law.
Ahh, but ‘49 wasn't all political connive,
Music rocked with the new 45s,
Giving Elvis, The Beatles, Stones, and more,
The doors to reach the teenage hordes.
And Siam, a cruel Colonial name,
Became Thailand and garnered Thai fame.
And... Also...
In July of this very same year,
The Second Coming deigned to appear -
Kevin Charles secured his place
With the beloved of our Irish race.
... and this has meant the world to me.
