The Ashes Of Hopes And Dreams Poem by Bryan Sefton

The Ashes Of Hopes And Dreams

What reason, what reason
What possible reason, repeating over again
I sit by my fireside and gaze at the embers
I look and I ponder, not one can I find
For finding a new love when here was a true love
And here with my heart crying out as I sit
I search for some hope that somehow you'll return
While bearing the truth in my mind

I sit by my fireside and gaze at the embers
I sift through the ashes that crumble to dust
Ashes of hopes and ashes of dreams
Great expectations all withered and burned
For here all around me I see you, I see you
Each way my head turns my eyes they espy
The things that are you love, the things that I gave you
Now all refused and now all returned

The ashes can't tell me. The past and the future
All of my happiness gone on the wind
Nothing is left but a wreck of the present
What once was a marvel has died in its prime
The feelings that hurt me, torment me and tear me
Is the knowledge of you in another man's arms
The knowing that you had to go out and look for
The love that was here and was yours all the time

Carry them wind. Run like a whippet.
Skip like a hare. Scurry and flutter
Carry them, carry them out of the window
Out to the world and then let them fall
Cover the trees and sow in the meadows
Be sure of the glades where lovers now walk
Be sure that they see them and so gaze upon them
And learn them a lesson each one and all

Yes carry them, carry them, let the world know
That so many ashes can come from my hopes
That so many ashes can come from my dreams
That this was the life I was sadly denied
Yes, tell the young lovers out there all about me
That what life I lived was happy and full
But tell of the ending for there is the learning
That as you departed I gave up and died
