The Autumn Poem by Emdad Shah Emdad

The Autumn

by Emdad Shah

The endless fields have caught the ripened yellow hue
And autumn breathes upon Bengal, of scent and morning dew
Along the grassy paths we tread, where blooms the chilly frost
In golden light the world awakes, by autumn's grace now crossed.

What season makes the dewdrop play upon the leaves so green?
It is the autumn, harvesting the golden light unseen
With crops that stretch across the fields where sunbeams burn and glow
The busy peasant works his land with eager haste below.

Field after field he wanders by, to sow the winter grain
And autumn brings a quiet peace to soothe the toiler's pain
The scent of newborn rice awakes the lotus in the heart
And sons-in-law to welcome homes with eager footsteps start.

With cutting and with threshing now the village lands resound
While high upon the straw-built stacks the golden sheaves are bound
The roasted rice and laughter rise, and joy is on each face
For autumn is the dearest friend we cherish and embrace.

The flattened rice and roasted grains invite the village fair
As new crop in autumn's dress begins her dances there
With all the bounty of the earth the distant plains are filled
And in the northern breeze the stalks of autumn lean and thrill.

The northern breeze is cool and soft, and wakes the soul to play
And autumn puts her colors on to wander far away
The trellis beans are clothed in blooms as autumn wanders by
And in the groves the chatim sings her dry-leaf lullaby.

The golden days of autumn are a time of sweet delight
Where sun and shadow hide and seek in chill and golden light
The fading nature wears a look of twilight drawing near
While earth's great heart and essence beat against the atmosphere.

The distant peaks of Himalayas are calling from afar
As autumn comes to bless Bengal beneath the evening star
