The Beast Poem by Rodney Dufault

The Beast

I saw the beast in you
and I have seen the beast in me,
but the beast I fear the most
is the beast that's running free.
It is lurking in the shadows
when the sun is at it's brightest,
placing weight upon your shoulders
when your load is at it's lightest.
When you're locked in darkness
the beast then comes for you.
You invite it in or fight it,
there is nothing else to do.

The beast, it always wins.
I only wish that wasn't true.

I saw the beast that night,
but I was too weak to slay it.
Even had I done so I would
not know where to lay it.
How deep would I have to bury it
so it could not return?
Deep within the center
where it all forever burns?
I sometimes feel that
my mind is like this earth is,
and every beast I bury
will just someday resurface.

The beast, it always wins.
So tell me - what's the purpose?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this between medicines for my seizures. First one almost drove me insane, second didn't work at all, maybe made them worse, almost died. I guess this is what my mind translated that experience into. Thanks for reading.
