The Bhutias Poem by Bijay Kant Dubey

The Bhutias

The Bhutias,
I just heard about,
Saw them not
And since my childhood
Have been,
Specially my father used to say
But deliberated it not
When want I know it more
Going beyond
Or even travelling by
But the curiosity ended it not.

The Bhutias,
Bhutia people,
Their history, culture,
Society,
Know I it not,
Their ritual and rites
And practices,
Cuisine and food habit.

Their tongue, language
Sikkimese
Closer to Tibetan and Dzongkha,
Belongiong to
Nyingma and Kagyu schools
Of Tibetan Buddhism,
The followers of
Vajrayana Buddhism
But spread in
Nepal, Kalimpong and Darjeeling,
Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim.

I do not about
Their Losar and Loosong festivals,
Dancing to celebrate
Padmasambhava or Guru Ugyen,
Their community things,
Drinking of Cchaang drink
Gossips and hilarity
And merry-making
And village councils.

The Bhutia houses
Generally known as khims,
The rectangular houses
With sangbums
Vase-like structures
Outside of
For burning
Aromatic
And sacred offerings
To thedeities
As such incense and others.
