The Bird Poem by Mahathi Mydavolu

The Bird

THE BIRD
The ticking time's bickerings, louder turned,
yet mellowed like a Mother's caress sweet
and tickling like a father's muffled smile!
The sky, the space and time appeared as one,
the same impeccable void around the world.
At wobbling nest, I beamed a flippant glance
and chided: 'Hey, be quiet...we have to wait...'
I sunk into my usual silence
till glowed the yonder bright with stars and Moon.
I wiggled once to shed one more feather.

The serpent vile below muttered again
in slimy voice; her sly welcome: 'Come on...
the heavens real are here, in deep abyss! '
I shrugged and turned towards the fluttering leaves
and said to myself: 'Incomplete remains
my learning, crude my ken...much more to read! '
When heard a voice murmur mellowed: 'Enough,
you had enough! An ocean can't be gulped...
It's time to practice! SADHANA is the key! '
I dazed and gasped and shed one more feather!

I kept looking at sky and waited long,
as glided Springs many before my eyes!
I'm looking now almost as bare as an egg
with plumage my reduced to just few quills.

That day I woke up wondering at the chaos
the Nature spun around my cozy nest!
A whirlwind wild in paling sky swallowed
anon, the dusking moon, the dimming stars
and slowly raising nervous Sun. And lo
a million lightenings flashed drilling the void
and there behold, a tunnel long and bright
unto an infinite distance stretched out
in snaky bends and curves before my eyes!

I felt the ticking stopped and silence pure
abounded my hallowed surrounds. I jumped
out of my fast dissevering fragile roost
and tried to stare around with blinking eyes.

I felt a mild perfume and soothing peace!
I writhed and sqirmed to shed my last feather
and fixed my gazes on the spectacle
enshrouding my milieu with dumb delight.
I know I'm now ready to fly...
and lo this time I need no wings! !
