The Brightest Poem by Edwina Reizer

The Brightest

There’s a star in the midnight sky above,
brighter than the rest.
Why the brightest, why tonight?
Because it has confessed
that while it’s shining it will burn out soon
and will be seen no more.
You and I will never see it, see it as before.
I will not search the midnight sky.
I shall refrain from doing this.
I shall pull down the shades in my room
and never again miss
the star in its space or the smile on your face
that was the brightest smile for me.
