The Burden In My Chest Poem by Lehlohonolo Selai

The Burden In My Chest

Two or three pats on my shoulders mate
For I have worked out over time now
Or so this weight in my chest seems to shout to me
The burden is heavy in my chest

Tell my heart to stop at once
In all its effortless ways to get through time
For love is a stain too heavy to remove with a tick-tock sound
The burden is heavy in my chest

The past seems to sound better today
As I dwell on a memory of a rare smile
And a once-in-a-while giggle of my Mary Jane
The burden is heavy in my chest

She'd be peeling bananas in her hands
So gently, oh my angel in her mom jeans on the lawn
While gazing into my eyes in this memory I have
The burden is quite heavy in my chest

I am sorry I met you, my Mary Jane
Looking like a black diamond I could not bare to loose
I apologise for holding on to your smile, I cannot seem to let go
Though the burden is heavy in my chest

I promised to be gone
I promised a lie in my defense, I confess
For putting you to laughter is an adventure I desire
Now the burden is heavy in my chest

My chest is heavy mate
Holding a rock-heavy heart
Longing for my Mary Jane and her marked cheeks
The burden is heavy in my chest
