The Carpenter Poem by Loyd C Taylor Sr

The Carpenter

These words describe a simple man. Joseph was his name.
He's often overlooked when we rejoice the Christ who came.

But just as God chose Mary to fulfill His holy plan,
He also chose young Joseph—a modest carpenter man.

Joseph's words are hard to find, for he did not complain
Of Mary's unborn baby or of what should be His name.

To the Angel, Joseph listened as God dispelled his fear;
Took Mary to him as his wife, his devotion ever clear.

Then, as he was instructed, he set out for Bethlehem,
The virgin Mary great with child as God was leading them.

In Bethlehem, he found a stable where they both could stay
And made his young wife comfortable upon a bed of hay.

Now came the time when Mary would bring forth the Holy One,
And Joseph named Him Jesus, for the Babe was God's own Son.

Joseph's life shows how God uses those who remain true
And, just like him, God uses common folks like me and you.

I hope these words bring recognition in some minute way
Of the humble carpenter God chose to use on Christmas day.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
As the Christmas story is repeated each year, we always recognize the role of Mary, the angelic host, the shepherds, and the wise men, but we often forget about Joseph. He normally receives little to no recognition in the drama of the incarnation. Recently while preparing my Christmas sermon, the topic being Joseph, I decided to write this poem to help us remember this great man. I asked my grandson Kaleb, age 10, to draw a picture of Mary and Joseph for me. I added the poem and picture together. Loyd, The simple poet.
