The Chicken Or The Egg? Poem by Denys E. W. Jones

The Chicken Or The Egg?

Rating: 2.7

Walking in a farmyard
A day or two ago,
I saw a free-range chicken
Running to and fro’.

Thought how that feathered friend
Racing on its legs,
Sure as Hell must have been
Hatched out of an egg.

But the egg it crawled from
(If you think again) ,
Couldn’t have done other than
Been laid by a hen.

And, no doubt, this very hen
(The one that laid the egg) ,
Not so long before was tucked
Snug inside an egg.

So, which came first –
The chicken or the egg?
That’s the nagging question
Rattling in my head.

How to solve this riddle’s
Quite beyond my ken.
Please tell me the answer,
‘Cos I’m going round the bend.
