The Coal Miners Poem by Bill Simmons

The Coal Miners

Rating: 5.0

I smell something burning?
What is that? I don’t know
I know I smelled that before
Just dig on out that coal!

Deep in the belly of a dark coal mine
They broke through a vein and was surprised to find
Walls on fire, a bottomless pit
I don’t know, what do you think it is?

Well, I don’t know, what do you think we found?
They dropped a pick in, didn’t hear a sound
Burning, burning, walls on fire
Suddenly, filled with wild desires

I’ve got this strange want to cheat on my wife!
And I’ve got this urge to just want to lie!
I don’t know, we should be all right
Go get me that lantern light

Suddenly, from the dark below
Came a pair of green eyes that scared their souls
I am he the key of destiny
You want to make a bargain, you make it with me

Then they saw him, he stood twelve feet tall
He had cloven feet and hoofs for paws
He had a big tail with a long hooked end
Horns on his head, he said, Look friends

You come down here to let me out this hour
Well that’s a good thing cause I got the power
I can full fill your wildest dreams
Just ask me, I can do anything

Now miner Tommy Lee was shaking to his knees
Trying not to stutter as he was trying to speak
I don’t know but I think so
My mama told me all about you long ago

Hey boys! We are in the Devil’s den!
We can’t let him out it will be the end
Set that charge and run like…..well!
The blast went off it closed the gate of hell!

The very next day the boys quit the mine
Tommy is now a postman a friend of mine
You can ask him and if he ‘s got the time
He will tell you about the Devil down in those mines

He will tell you about the pit and the wild desires
All about the flames and the walls of fire
He will tell you how the Devil thought it was his hour
But ten sticks of dynamite it had the power!

A very interesting tale. There were a few places that the cadence was off but overall I enjoyed the story.
