The Crucifixion (Sestets) Poem by Gert Strydom

The Crucifixion (Sestets)

In that night He did not sleep
Peter tried away from him to keep.
while the cock crowed he did God betray
made an oath and in haste did turn away.
Innocently He was found guilty:
the Jews did Him not as Messiah see.

Pontius Pilate warned by his wife
washed his hands and expected strive.
The Roman soldiers did Him mock,
with a thorny crown on his head took His frock.
I the thief, did my punishment deserve,
to crucify an innocent man they had the nerve.

"I say today, that you will be in paradise, "
they crucified him, did not their scorn disguise,
then in the afternoon it was dark as night
their mockery turned to become great fright.
Pure for all sinners they hanged him next to me,
dying He wanted the face of His Father to see.
