The Day Before April Poem by Mary Carolyn Davies

The Day Before April

Rating: 5.0

The day before April
   Alone, alone,
I walked in the woods
And I sat on a stone.

I sat on a broad stone
   And sang to the birds.
The tune was God's making
   But I made the words.

I still have the hand-written copy of this poem that I must have made in first or second grade. We were asked to write a melody to it, and my teacher liked it so much that she had me go to the principal's office and sing it for her. Coincidentally, I became a musician when I grew up. (I am in my late 70s now!) I remember a second verse, at least part of it: the tune that it sang it was prettier far/ Than ever I heard on the flute or guitar. Did I make that up?

I learned this poem at age 8 and recited it in school. I have always enjoyed it and found it coincidental that my fifth and last child was born on the day before April and she was a joy to raise and still a joy and I remain grateful that I was given this very good daughter.
