The Dr Watson Effect Poem by Raj Dronamraju

The Dr Watson Effect

Bathe in the glow of a supercilious ego
Unaware a giant sits among you tonight
Public praise for almost superhuman actions
We clap because we're conditioned to clap

The organ grinding monkey is leading the charge
The marketing managers, those who spin events for an easily led public
Have deemed and been deemed the message there is only one heroic figure
Bow to his accomplishments and the stories made whale-sized by frequent telling and re-telling
Bits added here and there, events re-shaped over time to be larger than life

Despite talent and genius in its own right,
An imposition of the role of second place
Forced onto the designated receiver
Designated thusly due to appearance, age, external factors

Reflect on accomplishments no longer superhuman
But celebrated as such by those who need a hero
Need pop culture figures to compare to their own worthless lives
Worthless is self-definition

Glamour for the master but not for the associate
The basic unfairness of two people doing the same job, only one gets credit
The task produces a basic equality of excellence in both participants
If only history would record this as a collaboration
